This project takes about a day or two to complete. Its a step by step worksheet that the student can do on their own. I incorporated the Body Mass Index (BMI) which, in my mind, is not a valid way for a student to look at their fitness or health. The BMI is good for a quick and average way to assess a person’s health. I believe that the Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) can help a student assess their own fitness/activity level and food intake based on their gender, caloric intake and activity. I have had several students in the past that have lost weight just by calculating their calories without changing their activity and visa-versa, where I have had student athletes maximize their caloric intake based on their activity output. It brings kinesiology into the classroom and student’s enjoy the findings based on their levels.
I did not produce a lesson plan as the worksheet is self explanatory. I do plan on creating one though as this worksheet has been modified over several years.
I look forward to hearing any and all input to create the perfect BMR lesson plan.
