Promoting Physical Activity Through Whole-School Assemblies
By Lee Sullivan and Vicky Randall
Supporting children and young people to move more is more important than ever. The Sport England Active Lives Children and Young People Survey (2024) found that fewer than half of 5 – 16 year-olds achieve the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity. Schools play a vital role in shaping attitudes and behaviours around movement, yet this message must extend beyond the Physical Education classroom.
To help embed the importance of physical activity across the whole school community, we’ve developed a series of engaging, adaptable, and age-appropriate assemblies. These assemblies are designed to spark curiosity, encourage reflection, and inspire the school community to take small steps towards action.
Assembly 1: Physical Activity and Me
Assembly 2: The Benefits of Physical Activity for Health
Assembly 3: How Physical Activity Supports Learning and Educational Attainment
Each session supports educators to:
- Promote key messages about the value of moving more
- Facilitate meaningful discussions among pupils
- Offer practical ideas for increasing daily activity
- Encourage a whole-school commitment to being active
These assemblies provide an opportunity to embed a culture of physical activity throughout the school day and across all year groups. Whether used as part of a wider health and wellbeing strategy or as stand-alone resources, we hope these resources will help support the message that physical activity is everyone’s responsibility, and to everyone’s benefit.
