Sensory Circuit Resource Cards

Do you have favourite core PE “go-to” warm ups aimed at getting your classes moving and motivated to learn? Do you start your lessons with high-energy and enthusiasm for your students to feed off?

Well, what if your students did not need any more energy? What if their previous lesson/s and experiences during the day have impacted how they feel when they arrive at PE?

The concept of “sensory circuit” activities are increasingly popular as professionals become more aware of the various strategies to support students as they arrive at and throughout lessons. Some students need alerting or organising at the start of a lesson, whilst others may need a calming activity.

This resource provides a range of activities designed to support young people to regulate their alertness, attention and readiness for learning. They can benefit all learners but may be particularly helpful in supporting those with sensory processing difficulties, ADHD, Autism and other co-occurring needs. Co-designed with a team of occupational therapists, the activities are categorised as follows:

  • Alterting
  • Organising
  • Calming

The choice of activity type will depend on the needs of the learner and what support they need to best prepare them for learning.

All activities use either basic equipment found in most PE storerooms or no equipment at all.
