Teaching physical education – PEdagogical Model: The Activist Approach

Revisiting our series of PEdagogical models one-pagers from back in 2024, we thought we would add to the collection.

The Activist Approach to Physical Education (PE) isn’t about doing more accurate passing skills or running faster laps. Instead, it’s a student-centered pedagogical model designed to transform PE from a “one-size-fits-all” sports curriculum into a space where students, particularly those who feel marginalized or disengaged, feel empowered and seen.

Significant work by scholars Oliver and Kirk, encourages an approach that moves away from the traditional “multi-activity” model and toward a curriculum that values student voice and social justice. This one-pager aims to summarise the key features and provide implementation tips so you can give it a go.
