Kī-o-Rahi game card

This game card series is intended to support teachers and student led activities with a simple one page summary of suitable setup and rules for some of the games that can be very effectively implemented in schools. Care is needed when selecting which games best meet your intended outcomes and which cohorts of children will engage best with different types of game.

Kī-o-Rahi is a traditional Māori ball game that can be played as tag, touch or full contact in a circular pitch.

The game involves two teams of runners (Ki-oma) or defenders (Taniwha). The Ki-oma start in an outer circle (Te Mārama) and run around touching posts (Ngā Pou) for potential points. After touching at least one post, they run into a small circle (Pāwero) around the middle target (Tupu) and put the ball down to lock those points in (like grounding in rugby).

The Taniwha defend the posts AND try to throw the ball at the Tupu to score instantly.

Sounds fun?! Read the attached game card to try this with your class.
