Returning to School: Covid-19 – take a moment to reflect

Returning To School

As we being to prepare for phased returning of pupils to schools after Covid-19 temporarily closed schools to all pupils except those of key workers, it is important we take a moment to reflect and collect our thoughts prior to walking back through the the school gates.

The video below helped highlight to me the role of teachers and how significant they will be to the children they teach when we return. Children will be looking to their teacher for…

  • Stability
  • Compassion
  • Empathy
  • Understanding
  • Strength
  • Passion
  • Comfort
  • Trust

…while they continue their learning. It will be difficult, it will not be like school before Covid-19 but school was and can be again a safe place for children to learn and grow as individuals. How we as teachers construct the learning environment and interact with our pupils will be the difference in how children and parents ‘feel’ about returning to school.

So as Aristotle once said “Those that know, do. Those that understand, teach!”. Compassion, empathy and understanding are just three of the many teacher characteristics that will be put to the test upon our return.
