Skin Cancer Education Program

The Skin Cancer Foundation, a non-profit organisation devoted solely to combating the world’s most common cancer, offers physical education teachers a free lesson plan on skin cancer and supporting materials. “Sun Smart U” is a free, interactive skin cancer prevention lesson plan for students in grades 6 to 12 that was designed in accordance with the CDC’s National Health Education Standards for middle school and high school students. The need for this program is urgent: more than 3.5 million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed every year in the U.S. and one person dies every hour of melanoma. Incidence of skin cancer continues to rise despite that it is easily preventable – exposure to UV radiation is the primary cause of skin cancer. So, public Skin Cancer Education is critical. Sun Smart U aims to influence youth behaviour at a crucial time in their development, when sun safety behaviours can be established for a lifetime.

Sun Smart U is available free at https://www.skincancer.org/about-us/education-programs/. Registration is required but we do not share your email with any outside organisations; they are collected for counting purposes.

Sun Smart U is available in a variety of formats, including SMART Board, Promethean, iBooks for iPads, iPhones and Mac computers, Microsoft PowerPoint and Interactive PDF for Android and Windows mobile devices and Mac computers. More than 3,200 teachers have used Sun Smart U in districts across the U.S. Please help reach students with a message that could save a life!
