Dodgeball – Benchball game card

This game card series is intended to support teachers and student led activities with a simple one page summary of suitable setup and rules for some of the games that can be very effectively implemented in schools. Care is needed when selecting which games best meet your intended outcomes and which cohorts of children will engage best with different types of game.

Before downloading this resource, we highly recommend you take a read of this blog by Lee Sullivan. We know that dodgeball is a popular game in schools and have experience of implementing and seeing it implemented successfully but you need to think carefully about your particular groups to assess whether it is appropriate or not. There can be significant challenges with regard to purpose, inclusion, social justice and activity levels BUT if you are confident you can get those right in your setting and respond to the needs of your students then we hope this game card is helpful.

The aim of this game is to eliminate all players on the opposing team by hitting them with the ball
below shoulder height.

Ways to Get an Opponent Out:
● Hit them with the ball below shoulder height (including hands and arms).
● Catch a ball thrown by the opposition before it hits the floor.
● If anyone steps over the coned midline.

See the attached game card for further details and remember to carefully consider how students remain engaged and involved in any games that include an ‘elimination’ element.
