PE Profiles for Pupils with SEND

Many schools use One-Page Profiles as a best practice tool to support children with SEND; helping to capture important information about the child’s strengths, needs, and strategies that work well for them. They can also come in the format of Individual Education Plan (IEP) or Personal Learning Plans. These documents are typically created collaboratively, involving the child, parents or carers, and school staff.

However, these profiles often lack important information that could support the child to manage the unique and wide ranging factors that Physical Education lessons present. This profile should be completed with the child and used alongside any existing support material.

A PE profile is a personalised resource designed to ensure that pupils with special educational needs or additional needs feel supported, safe, and confident in their PE lessons. It gives staff a clear overview of each pupil’s strengths, challenges, and preferred strategies, helping teachers to plan inclusive activities and make meaningful and reasonable adjustments.

By highlighting individual goals, communication styles, and practical considerations, the profile promotes positive experiences in PE and encourages every pupil to take part, achieve, and enjoy physical activity.

There are two examples provided in the resource, the first example uses:

  • Physcial / Activity
  • Sensory
  • Communication
  • Social / Interaction

and the second example uses Move, Feel, Think and Connect that relates to the physical literacy consensus statement for England.
